A Japanese keyboard works with an input method editor (IME). The physical keyboard sends letter or Kana keystrokes; the IME builds a phonetic reading in Hiragana and can convert that reading into Katakana or Kanji candidates. The user confirms the candidate that matches the intended meaning.
Hardware and software have different jobs
The physical keyboard provides keys. A Japanese JIS model adds Kana legends and conversion controls, but it is not what makes Kanji appear. The IME is the software layer that interprets the keystrokes.
A standard English keyboard can therefore type Japanese. Once a Japanese IME is enabled, QWERTY letters can be read as Romaji rather than ordinary English text.
Romaji input
Romaji input spells Japanese sounds with Latin letters. Type kanji, and the IME first composes かんじ. Request conversion and a candidate such as 漢字 may appear.
This is not letter-by-letter substitution. The IME parses sequences:

Romaji is popular because it works naturally on QWERTY hardware and requires fewer new physical key positions.
Kana input
Direct Kana input maps each physical key to a Japanese Kana, often printed on a JIS keycap. It can reduce the number of keystrokes for fluent users, but the layout requires separate muscle memory. On a keyboard without Kana legends, it is difficult to learn by sight.
Kana input still uses the IME for composition and Kanji conversion. The difference is how the phonetic reading enters the system.
Why Japanese needs candidates
Japanese contains many homophones. The reading こうしょう can correspond to different words depending on context. An IME therefore proposes candidates rather than assigning one Kanji string permanently to a sound.
Longer context helps an IME rank candidates, but the writer remains responsible for confirming meaning. This is why Kanji conversion is more complex than changing Hiragana shapes into another script.
Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji in the workflow
Hiragana is commonly the composition layer because every Japanese reading can be represented phonetically. Katakana may be selected for loanwords, sound effects, and other conventional uses. Kanji candidates represent words and morphemes, not just sounds.
An ordinary sentence uses all three systems together. The IME preserves Hiragana where grammar calls for it and converts selected segments when the user requests or accepts candidates.
Japanese and English switching
Operating systems offer a language switch plus modes inside the Japanese IME. Selecting Japanese may leave the IME in direct alphanumeric mode, so Latin letters continue to appear. Switching to Hiragana mode activates Romaji-to-Kana composition.
JIS keyboards often have dedicated keys for toggling input and controlling conversion. On US hardware, shortcuts such as Windows key + Space or Control + Space can switch input sources, depending on the operating system.
What this browser keyboard does
The Japanese keyboard online provides the phonetic part of the workflow: it converts Romaji to Hiragana or Katakana and offers direct Kana keys. It does not choose Kanji because reliable candidate selection needs lexical context and user confirmation.
That boundary is useful: use the browser tool for Kana, study, and short text; use a full IME when composing contextual Kanji sentences across applications.
