This changes the script, not the word or meaning. It is useful for comparing Kana forms and preparing pronunciation-focused text.

Two scripts for the same sound inventory

Hiragana and Katakana represent closely matching Japanese morae. Script conversion therefore changes ひらがな into ヒラガナ, or the reverse, without translating the word.

What remains unchanged

Kanji, Latin letters, Arabic numerals, spaces, and most punctuation remain unchanged. The long-vowel mark is preserved; a dictionary may spell the equivalent native Hiragana word differently.

When each script is used

Hiragana commonly carries grammar, native words, and readings. Katakana commonly marks foreign loanwords, scientific names, sound effects, or emphasis. See both sets side by side in the Hiragana chart and Katakana chart.
