Japanese Vocabulary by Topic and JLPT Level
Explore 90 Japanese words organized by daily life, food, travel, school, work, and nature, with Kanji, Kana readings, meanings, and N5–N1 study filters.
Explore vocabulary by topic
Filter study words by practical theme and approximate JLPT study band.
No words match this filter.
JLPT organizers do not publish a fixed official vocabulary list for each level. These labels are practical study estimates, and words can appear in multiple contexts.
Why study vocabulary by topic?
Topic groups create useful associations. Travel words are easier to retrieve together when reading a timetable or planning a journey than when they were memorized as unrelated alphabetical entries.
Move through the level filters
Begin with one topic at your current level. Read the Kanji, say the Kana, and recall the meaning before revealing your notes. Then compare the next level within the same topic to expand the same mental network.
There is no fixed official word list
The JLPT describes the competence required for each level but does not present a single official vocabulary checklist for learners. Its official FAQ explains why post-2010 content specifications do not publish vocabulary, Kanji, and grammar lists. The labels in this explorer are practical study bands, not a promise that a word will or will not appear on an exam.
Turn browsing into recall
Copy the visible list, make a small flashcard set, and write one sentence per word. After studying, use the JLPT Level Quiz for a broader knowledge check or the Study Planner to set a weekly vocabulary target.
